141 items have entered into the 19th competition, held on 14 March. Only Kadarka or Kadarka cuvée wines were allowed to enter in the following categories: white, rose, siller and red. 118 out of the 141 wines were pure Kadarka.
The highest prize, the “Kadarka Nagydíj” of the XIXth Kadarka International Wine Competition, was awarded to Besenyei Wine House (Eger region), the second prize to Mészáros Wine House Kft. (Szekszárd region) and the third to Bock Winery Kft. (Villány region).
The special prize offered by the “Kadarka Kör” was awarded to the “Szekszárd Kadarka” of Vesztergombi Bt. Another special prize – “Legszebb Siller Bor” (Nicest Siller Wine) – offered by the “Szentendrei Kadarka Kör”, was won by the „Kiskőrösi Kadarka” of István Hlavács.
The elegant plaque of the “Legszebb Cuvée” offered by István Wine House was won by the Besenyei Wine House.
The six best wines selected by three panels of judges were originated from five different regions. A special panel of judges assessed these wines and selected the one with the “Kadarka Nagydíj”.
Over many decades the grape of Kadarka was grown i-n most of the vineyards in Hungary. As modern varieties gained more ground and industrial processing became more widespread and production became less economical, the position of Kadarka diminished. But today Kadarka is grown again in more and more regions.
